Meet the Artist this Saturday: Reverse Painted Jewelry by Jane Carpenter
Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will host a reception to feature Gulfport artist Jane Carpenter and her colorful reverse-painted jewelry. This installment of Domain’s monthly “Meet the Artists” events will take place on Saturday, March 21st, 6 until 10 p.m. at 3129 Beach Boulevard South in Gulfport. Complimentary wine, hors d’oeuvre and live jazz will be offered.
Jane Carpenter’s bright and whimsical jewelry is inspired by her “menagerie” of animals, as well as the garden and sea. Each of her pieces includes meticulously-rendered reverse paintings on clear Lucite, created using tiny brushes, applicators and even toothpicks. The reverse painting technique dates from the 4th century. Carpenter’s jewelry, including earrings, pins, pendants and necklaces, is mounted on embossed and embellished sterling silver. Her other art works include paintings on Masonite and Plexiglas, as well as pen and ink on paper.
Carpenter earned her BA and MFA in art, with an emphasis on jewelry. She has spent many years plying the art show circuit throughout the country. After discovering Gulfport in the early 1990s and finding it “quaint, welcoming and full of artists,” she began living here as a “snowbird,” then moved fulltime in 1994. Her jewelry is a recent addition to the offerings at Domain. She will be showing several additional pieces for one night only during this “Meet the Artists” event.
Established in March 2001, Domain Home Accessories offers a variety of unique art, décor, lighting, jewelry, cards, home goods and more, and has earned a reputation as one of Gulfport’s most respected retailers. “& Gallery” opened in 2012 in the adjacent space and showcases the work of over 40 local and regional artists.
“Meet the Artists” events at “& Gallery” occur during Gulfport’s popular Third Saturday Art Walk. Artists and artisans line the sidewalks of scenic Beach Boulevard on Art Walk evenings. Independent shops and boutiques, live music venues, street performers, and Gulfport’s many popular restaurants are all part of the lively Art Walk scene. Parking in the waterfront village is free and convenient. Free trolleys are available for visitors parking in remote sites for transportation to and from the hub of Art Walk.
