Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will host a reception to welcome visiting pottery artist Bari Precious and highlight a large cache of new work by the artist.  This installment of Domain’s monthly “Meet the Artists” events will take place on Saturday, February 21st, 6 until 10 p.m. at 3129 Beach Boulevard South in Gulfport.  Complimentary wine, hors d’oeuvre and live jazz will be offered.

The colorful and functional pottery of Bari Precious has been a hit since it was first offered by Domain four years ago.  It is now regularly collected by a large number of clients.  This new selection of pieces will offer a chance for guests to add to their collections of “Bari Ware” and will be sure to attract new collectors.  Domain is the only retailer offering her ceramics east of the Mississippi River.

Working in her “Precious Pots” studio in the rural outskirts of Springfield, Missouri, she produces a variety of stoneware pottery that is art with practical applications in the home.  Her hand-painted designs and glazes display a sense of tribal, geometric or nature-inspired influences.  In addition to vases, pitchers and mugs, she creates bowls, plates, platters and dishes that are specifically designed to be safe for use in ovens, microwaves and barbecues.  Domain also offers copies of some of Bari’s favorite recipes which can be made and served using her stoneware pottery including baked brie, brownies, banana bread, honey-mustard chicken and baked fish.

Bari Precious was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia and became interested in working with clay from an early age, going on to study sculpture at the Vancouver School of Art.  She left school to embark upon other adventures, including farming and communal life, and then travels through Europe, Asia and the Middle East during the 1970s.  She nurtured her fascination with Iran by spending time there teaching art and English, and later returning to work with archeologists by building a kiln and reassembling excavated pottery.  On return to the U.S., she raised her family for several years before reentering university studies and earning a B.F.A. in ceramics.  Her studio, gardens and home in the Missouri countryside are comfortable spaces where visitors are welcome to stop, share tea and peruse her “Precious Pots.”

Meet “Plein Air” Painter Jana Somach This Saturday.

Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will feature the work of local “plein air” artist Jana Somach during its first “Meet the Artists” event of 2015 on Saturday, January 17th, 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.  The artist will be showing a variety of her work, including paintings not previously available at the Gallery.  Live jazz, complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvre will be offered.

Jana Somach and her family have lived in Pinellas County for over 40 years.  Always interested in art while growing up in the Netherlands, she went on to study metalsmithing and graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam with jewelry as her creative output at the time.  Somach moved with her husband to the U.S. in 1972 and settled in Florida.  After a period of time in which weaving was her medium of choice, she studied painting at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center.

Her enthusiastic embrace of the plein air (a French term meaning “open air”) process began a few years ago.  Plein air painters situate themselves away from their studios, most often in outdoor settings, and capture the essence of what they see, complete with the natural light and shadows that occur.

“We are limited in the time we have to complete a painting, usually only about two hours, because of the movement of the sun and shadows,” explains Somach.  She typically travels to plein air settings with a regular small group of women friends, often capturing Florida scenes close to water such as Honeymoon Island, the Tarpon Springs docks and Anclote River.

Somach’s plein air paintings are a recent addition to “& Gallery.”  She will bring several additional plein air paintings to the “Meet the Artists” event, as well as some of her work in still life and portraiture.

Two Gulfport Artists Coming to Saturday Open House

Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will host its final “Meet the Artists” event of 2014 with a showcase of work by two favorite Gulfport artists: jewelry designer Doug D’souza and painter/photographer Cheryll Grogan.

Both artists offer works that are ideal for holiday gift-giving.

The event will take place at “& Gallery” (3129 Beach Blvd. South in Gulfport) on Saturday, December 20th from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.  Both artists will be present to discuss their work with guests.  Live jazz and holiday music, complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvre will be offered.

Doug D’souza was born in India and came to the U.S. at the age of 18.  He moved to Florida in 1994, and then located to Gulfport permanently seven years ago.  He is a self-taught metal smith, working primarily in artisan jewelry since 1998.  D’souza describes his inspirations as industrial design and architecture, along with culture, spiritual symbolism and the “natural beauty of the organic.”  His previous creations included small and large sculptures and room dividers, incorporating etched and carved glass.  A back injury during an art installation forced him to change the type and size of his work, resulting in his focus on wearable art.

Working from his home studio in Gulfport, he incorporates metals including silver, gold, copper and bronze as well as more “modern” materials such as metal clay, aluminum and Lucite.  New work, including a new line of mixed metal cuff bracelets, as well as pendants, personalized and symbol jewelry, wedding bands, cuff links and earrings are among his creations that will be displayed and offered for sale during the event.  D’souza’s work has been featured and sold at Domain for many years.

Cheryll Grogan has been a Gulfport resident for 20 years.  Before, during and after stints in the U.S. Army and Postal Service, she created and studied art, earning her BFA with a concentration in photography.  While still employed at the post office, she continued to create and show her art work on a freelance basis, including murals and photos.  Grogan felt confident enough in her abilities to “jump ship” and become a self-employed artist over ten years ago.

She travels widely, displaying and selling art work at shows throughout the country.  Locally, she has shown her work at many Gulfport festivals and events, as well as St. Petersburg’s Mainsail Art Festival.  She has been a featured artist at the Dunedin Art Harvest and Palm Harbor Art Festival.  Her work featured at Domain includes original paintings and photographs, as well as affordable giclees on canvas.

Favored subjects include buildings and scenes from Gulfport, Key West and other Florida locations, as well as vintage “cool” cars and trucks.  She continues to create murals and other work on commission, including popular “house portraits.”

Gulfport native Eric Folsom returned to his home town in 1975 after a period of self-education, followed by an apprenticeship in which he honed his creative skills in brazing and fabricating bronze and copper.  He has exhibited his work throughout the East Coast.  His work includes both decorative and functional pieces, including home décor, serve ware and boxes, which have been displayed and sold at Domain for many years.  Most recently, his expanding line of distinctive jewelry has become a best seller.

Daniel “Abraham” Flores is a Florida native with a fascination for the outdoors, where his encounters with sun, sand, fish, birds and other animals inspire much of the subject matter for his art.  The lore of the sea also inspires works depicting whimsical mermaids.  Most of his pieces are carved and sculpted on recycled wood, painted, and then thickly layered with protective lacquered finishes.  His art works are often mistaken for polished ceramics due to their texture and sheen.  In the last year he has also begun to offer furniture pieces, especially tables with tops displaying his signature hand-carved and lacquered look.  Since his introduction to Domain visitors two years ago, he has developed a significant number of local collectors.

“& Gallery” 2nd Anniversary Celebration and Sensational Sale!

2nd anniversary

Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will host a reception and one-night-only Anniversary Sale to celebrate the two-year anniversary of its “& Gallery” space.  The event will take place at Domain Home Accessories & Gallery (3129 Beach Blvd. South in Gulfport) on Saturday, September 20th from 6 to 10 p.m.  Complimentary beverages and hors d’oeuvre will be offered during the sale and celebration, and jazz saxophonist Henry Ashwood will entertain visitors.

For over 13 years, Domain Home Accessories has offered a unique assortment of merchandise, becoming a treasured retailer in the heart of Gulfport’s Waterfront Arts District.  The keystone of this small, independent business has always been original art work, with an emphasis on functional art for the home.  Housed in its small, colorful quarters are floor to ceiling displays of home décor, lamps and lighting, jewelry, kitchen ware and entertainment accessories, pottery, glassware, decorative hardware, candles, bath and body products, gifts, greeting cards and much more.  The shop is well-known as a supporter of local art and artists, as well as the “go-to” location for a selection of unique items and gifts unavailable elsewhere.

In September 2012, Domain Home Accessories acquired the adjacent retail space, creating a combined business now named “Domain Home Accessories & Gallery.”  The remodeled two-year-old space serves as one of Gulfport’s finest art galleries, representing a large number of local and regional artists.  Monthly “Meet the Artists” events at “& Gallery” have become a popular gathering for locals and visitors to mingle, meet local and visiting artists, and browse the latest offerings of the shop and gallery.

On the occasion of its second anniversary, “& Gallery” will offer its first ever Annual Anniversary Sale.  Selected art works by over 30 artists on display in the Gallery will be offered at sale prices ranging from 10% to 75% off.  Art in a wide variety of media will be available during the sale, including paintings, prints, drawings, wood, glass, pottery, metal, fiber, basketry, photography, jewelry, paper, mosaics and mixed media.  Several of the artists who exhibit their work at Domain will be present during portions of the evening.  These and other artists will have work available at Anniversary Sale prices for one night only: Charles Albert, Diane Bragg, Gary Clark, Kristine Daley, Mike Darras, Kimberly Dawn, Doug D’souza, Daniel “Abraham” Flores, Cheryl Grogan, Andy Hamilton, Becky Jamin, Martha Johnson, Larry Kingsley, Dan MacCosbe, Katherine Marra, Gary Mellenbruch, John “The Hairy Potter” Moore, Owen Pach, Bari Precious, Valerie Scott, David Sherer, John Shevlin, Frank Strunk III, Kevin Webb and Peggy Wollins.

“Meet the Artists” events at “& Gallery” occur during Gulfport’s popular third Saturday Art Walk.  Artists and artisans line the sidewalks of scenic Beach Boulevard on Art Walk evenings.  Independent shops and boutiques, live glassblowing at the Industrial Arts Center, live music venues, street performers, and Gulfport’s many popular restaurants are all part of the lively Art Walk scene.  Parking in the waterfront village is free and convenient.  Free trolleys are available for visitors parking in remote sites for transportation to and from the hub of Art Walk.  For more information, contact Daniel Hodge, (727) 366-4086 or email dan@igc.org.
