"OMG" by Peggy Wollins

“OMG” by Peggy Wollins

Peggy Wollins creates fish, or more specifically, fish heads.  From her Maymeep Studio in Centreville, Virginia, she depicts imaginary, one-of-a-kind marine life from clay.  According to Wollins, “As a lifelong art junkie, doodler and animal lover my subject matter makes sense. I worked in the art gallery industry for ten years, stopping when I had kids. I started taking a pottery wheel class, and was quickly smitten.”  Her pieces are wheel-thrown, then altered and augmented using found objects.  She uses a variety of ceramic firing methods and also some post fired finishes, including hand applied gold, silver and copper leaf.  Old typewriters, sewing machines, stereo components and other simple machinery yield a treasure trove of small components for the final quirky twist in each art work.  “& Gallery” will display and offer a selection of new, all-original pieces by Wollins.

Tribal multi-colored fish: painting by John Shevlin

Tribal multi-colored fish: painting by John Shevlin

Gulfport artist John Shevlin Jr. has dubbed his signature style “Tropical Funk,” with its bold colors, strong graphics and a simplistic or tribal style with subject matter inspired by Florida and South Beach scenes.  A sense of humor is a strong element in much of his work, including “funky” fish, flamingos, crustaceans and penguin “snowbirds” complete with sunglasses.  Palms and hibiscus blossoms are frequent subjects of his “pop art” stylings.  His fondness for martinis shows up in many humorous small paintings.  He uses acrylics, often mixed with metallics, creating a unique texture and feel.  In addition to his traditional paintings, John now offers some new works that are treated and suitable for display in outdoor settings.

His work has been collected internationally, and has recently been adopted by a Caribbean resort for décor in guest rooms, as well as the offices and public areas of a corporate headquarters.  He won an award for oil and acrylic paintings at the 2011 Space Coast Art Show.  Shevlin paintings have become a ubiquitous feature in hundreds of local homes.

Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will host its next “Meet the Artists” event with a showing of new work by mother and son folk artists, Linda and Matt Worsham, as well as an appearance by local author Ani Crane.  The event will take place at “& Gallery” (3129 Beach Blvd. South in Gulfport) on Saturday, May 17th, 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

The artists and author will be on hand to discuss their work.  Complimentary beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be offered, and jazz saxophonist Henry Ashwood will entertain.

Linda and Matt Worsham collaborate in their own line of work they call “GypsyCat Creations,” mixed-media folk art sculptures with a strong sense of whimsy and play.  Recycled and found materials are the primary ingredients of the pieces, inside and out, with sealed, repurposed fabric on the surfaces creating a finished texture and color.  Lighting elements are added to some pieces to create functional art “lamps.”  “Critters” such as cats, dogs, birds, dragons, frogs, geckos and more, sometimes anthropomorphized with human costumes and characteristics, are the primary subjects of “GypsyCat.”  Matt and Linda create pieces individually, though they often collaborate in ideas, techniques and materials.  Matt’s creations, including his popular giraffes, are more typically dense and muted in color, while Linda’s pieces are often vibrantly colored and humorous.

Linda has also created a smaller body of work in paintings and will show some of those during the event.  Matt works as a case manager for adults with developmental disabilities.  He developed the basic process for “GypsyCat Creations” while leading art classes for his clients.  He began creating more complex forms on his own time and started “GyspyCat Creations” in 2010.  Linda is retired from a career in social services.  After creating art in many forms in her spare time, she was inspired by her son’s “GypsyCat Creations” and joined him in the creative process.  Both are Gulfport residents.  They are veteran participants in the twice-monthly Gulfport Art Walk.  Their work has been offered at “& Gallery” since 2012, and collectors from throughout the country have claimed “critters” of their own.

Gulfport resident and author Ani Crane has been a writing teacher for 20 years in New York City and practices daily journal writing.  She will be on hand to discuss her memoir, “How I Arrived Here,” described as “the story of the transformational journey of one woman from codependence to empowerment and all the adventures along the way… from happiness to sorrow, struggle, recovery and finally victory and joy!”  Copies of the book will be on sale for the author to sign.

The featured artist specializes in depictions of local seaside landmarks, as well as maritime creatures and mythical mermaids.  His work has become a customer favorite since he began displaying it in “&Gallery” in 2012.  Gary will be on hand to discuss his work and answer questions.

Live entertainment by jazz saxophonist Henry Ashwood will also be featured during the evening, and complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvre will be offered.

Tierra Verde artist Gary Mellenbruch’s watercolor and designers’ gouache paintings depict scenes that many local residents will find familiar.  Iconic and colorful attractions such as the Don CeSar resort, Merry Pier and the Wharf restaurant in Pass-a-Grille, as well as Gulfport’s own Williams Pier, O’Maddy’s Bar & Grill, and Pia’s Trattoria are among the images that draw on talents Gary has honed in a long career as an architectural illustrator.

Originally from Kansas City, he studied industrial design and after becoming an apprentice illustrator, formed his own “Mellenbruch Studios” in 1969, creating architectural illustrations for clients from around the world.  Accompanied by his sailboat, he moved to Tierra Verde in 1998, continuing illustration work, but concentrating on fine arts.  He also operates his own art framing business.  Attention to details and an emphasis on scale and perspective stem from his years in architectural illustration.

The Florida environment also inspires his many depictions of natural maritime scenes, including vivid portrayals of sea birds and their habitat.  He is also fond of mermaids and has devoted some of his paintings to those creatures of maritime lore.  Gary has shown work at “& Gallery” since its inception, and offers both originals and affordably-priced prints.

This installment of Domain’s monthly “Meet the Artists” event will take place on Saturday, March 15th from 6 to 10 p.m. at 3129 Beach Boulevard South in the Gulfport Waterfront District.

Live entertainment by jazz saxophonist Henry Ashwood will also be featured during the evening, and complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvre will be offered.  Free birthday cake to celebrate the 13th anniversary of Domain will also be served.

Native Floridian Diane Posnanski-Bragg grew up in the Tampa Bay area and has been inspired by the tropical plants, flowers and wildlife she has encountered here since childhood, creating art reflecting the nature around her as she grew up.  She attended the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale and after 25 years of “conventional” work in the fields of graphic and advertising design, she returned to her more creative roots, working with Postich Stained Glass Studio in Largo, Florida.

She soon established her own independent glass studio, and then partnered with her former husband working with stained and fused glass, as well as glass and metal sculpture.  The pair travelled extensively, participating in and accumulating awards at art shows throughout the country, including annual appearances at the Ann Arbor Art Fair and St. Petersburg’s Mainsail Art Festival.  Now as a solo artist with Diane Bragg Studio, the shapes, colors and essence of her art work celebrate the roots, leaves and blooms of Florida as much as ever.

Contemporary, bright and textural, Diane’s current fused glass pieces include jewelry, decorative wall plaques and hangings, including many that feature a single word of inspiration (“believe,” “breathe,” “imagine!”), as well as functional pieces such as clocks and coasters.  Diane’s work, beginning with her stained glass pieces, has been a mainstay at Domain Home Accessories since its beginnings.
