It’s Gecko Season in Gulfport!

GECKO SEASON in Gulfport celebrates the end of summer each year honoring our favorite reptile!  Our town represents its quirky nature  with fun-filled events stretching from the beginning of August through Labor Day weekend.  A first annual “Gecko Artists Show” is now on display at the Catherine Hickman Theater.  The annual “Gecko Pub Crawl” was held earlier this month.  And we are still looking forward to the 7th Annual Gecko Ball on August 29th, and the 15th Annual GeckoFest on September 5th.

“Gecko Gras!” is the theme of this year’s festivities, with Mardi Gras-style costumes (intermixed with gecko costumes) and festivities being flaunted at each event.  A few tickets are still available for the Gecko Ball, known as Gulfport’s “Party of the Year”!  And GeckoFest, our largest and oldest street festival, is a FREE day-long, family-friendly celebration.  A portion of proceeds from all Gecko events are donated to local charities each year.

For more information on GeckoFest and the Gecko Ball, including ticket information, go to GeckoFest.com.

AND… if you are contemplating adding a Gecko touch to your Gecko Ball or GeckoFest costume, Domain is your source for Gecko tails in Gulfport!  Come in and pick yours out soon.

Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will welcome artist John DeGiorgio during its next “Meet the Artists” event on Saturday, August 15th, 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. (3129 Beach Boulevard South in Gulfport).  DeGiorgio is a recent transplant to Gulfport and began offering his work through Domain earlier this year.

It will be his first personal appearance at the Gallery.  Complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvre will be offered during the event as well as live jazz.

John DeGiorgio creates images that present themselves to him both in actuality and in imagination.  He works in graphite, colored pencils, charcoals and other media, primarily on paper.  He has also worked in painting and murals.  In New York, he was fond of capturing quick candid portraits in the city’s subways.

His figure studies range from models to people on the street to friends.  Other works include faces and bodies and body parts amid surrealist landscapes. His guided “journeys” for people exploring art and creativity include one-night group “Paint Dates,” as well as more intensive multi-week self-portraiture projects called “Shedding the Mask.”  Domain offers both originals and prints by John DeGiorgio.

Established in March 2001, Domain Home Accessories offers a variety of unique art, décor, lighting, jewelry, greeting cards, home goods and more, earning a reputation as one of Gulfport’s most respected retailers.  “& Gallery” opened in 2012 in the adjacent space and showcases the work of over 40 local and regional artists.

“Meet the Artists” events at “& Gallery” occur during Gulfport’s popular Third Saturday Art Walk.  Artists and artisans line the sidewalks of scenic Beach Boulevard on Art Walk evenings.  Independent shops and boutiques, live music venues, street performers, and Gulfport’s many popular restaurants are all part of the lively Art Walk scene.

Parking in the waterfront village is free and convenient.  Free trolleys are available for visitors parking in remote sites for transportation to and from the hub of Art Walk.

For more information on this event, contact Daniel Hodge, (727) 366-4086; or visit our Facebook page.
